Adaptación de la célebre novela de Noah Gordon. Todo empieza cuando un niño de 9 años llamado Rob J. Cole (Tom Payne) es adoptado por un barbero (Stellan Skarsgard) con el que recorrerá Inglaterra representando espectáculos callejeros. Cuando el barbero fallece, Rob conoce a un médico judío que le presentará a su mentor: el científico persa Ibn Sina (Ben Kingsley). Será entonces cuando Rob decidirá estudiar para ser médico. Pero para ello tendrá que viajar a Persia y simular que es un judío, ya que en su escuela no aceptan a los cristianos.
